Prayers of the Church

For the sick

O God, the strength of the weak and the consolation of all who put their trust in You, mercifully accept our prayers on behalf of Your servant [name] that by Your power [his/her] sickness may be turned to health according to Your good and gracious will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Thanksgiving for the recovery of a sick adult

O God, the giver of life, health, safety, and strength: we bless You for having granted to Your servant(s), [name(s)], recovery from [his/her/their] bodily sickness. Fill [his/her/their] heart(s) with daily remembrance of Your great goodness, and grant that [he/she/they] may serve You with a holy and obedient life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

For a sick child

Almighty God, Father in heaven, watch over Your child [name] now afflicted with sickness. Mercifully spare the life You have given. Relieve [his/her] pain, guard [him/her] from all danger, and restore [his/her] health according to Your gracious will, that [he/she] may be raised to a life of faithful service to You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Thanksgiving for the recovery of a sick child

Gracious God, our Father, we thank and praise You for blessing [name] with recovery from sickness. Continue to strengthen [him/her] in body, mind, and soul, and grant [him/her] an increase and continuance of well-being and a full appreciation of Your gift of health; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

For one near death

Eternal Father, You alone make the decisions concerning life and death. We ask You to show mercy to Your servant [name], whose death seems imminent. If it be Your gracious will, restore [him/her] and lengthen [his/her] earthly life; but if not, keep [him/her] in [his/her] baptismal grace and in Your abiding care. Give [him/her] a repentant heart, firm faith, and a lively hope. Let not the fear of death cause [him/her] to waver in confidence and trust. At Your chosen time, grant [him/her] a peaceful departure and a joyous entrance into everlasting life with the glorious company of all Your saints; through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Thanksgiving for the life of the recently deceased

Gracious Lord, we give You thanks for the days of earthly life You granted to [name], for the grace bestowed in Christ Jesus, for [his/her] adoption and rebirth in Holy Baptism, and for all the good [he/she] was permitted to give and to receive. We entrust [him/her] to Your mercy and pray for the sustaining comfort of Your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the same Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Time of bereavement

Heavenly Father, into whose keeping we entrust our loved ones, help us to look to You in our time of sorrow, remembering the cloud of faithful witnesses with which we are surrounded. Grant that we may one day share in the joys of those who now rest in Your presence; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Thanksgiving to God

Heavenly Father, God of all grace, govern our hearts that we may never forget Your blessings but steadfastly thank and praise You for all Your goodness in this life until, with all Your saints, we praise You eternally in Your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Thanksgiving at the birth of a child

O God, giver of all blessings, we praise You for this gift of a new life granted to these parents in the birth of a [son/daughter]. Protect mother(s) and [child/children] and shield them from anything harmful in body or soul. Give joy to these parents as they bring [this child / these children] for reception into Your kingdom through the water of Holy Baptism, and grant [this child / these children] Your continued blessing; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
